The primary problem I have with this has to do with Lecavalier. He is currently occupying Canes final Keeper spot. If you downgrade him to an 84, they are dropping their final keeper spot from a reputable 86 player to a who-cares 84. The trade-off doesn't really provide them with any upgrades they need, as they downgrade 2 at C and only upgrade 1 on their current 2nd line LW (MacArthur).
84s are "lose to the draft" players, 86s are protect players. I do not mean this as in "rejected because he will lose Eller to the draft" I mean it in terms of the quality of the player. YOu can draft any old 84 ina draft, but an 86 is a 1st round-calibre player. In essence, Carolina is wasting a protect on a 2nd round player.
I hope I explained that in a way that makes sense.
