The upgrade for Canes might be minor on averages, but they are in areas they desperately need (defence), and they give up in areas they do not need (such as in goal).



Breakdown

Hull = Gaborik
Potvin, Lecavalier, Fowler, Zherdev= Anderson, Phillips, Tlusty, Gaudreau
Liles = Rozsival
Lack, Omark, Filatov = Stone

- The 1 overall downgrade in net doesn't hurt them, as they have Hextall 87.
- They downgrade 2 overalls at second line C (Getting Tlusty), gets them a lot younger there. The trade-off is a 1st line D in Phillips, rated 85. A huge upgrade in a position they lack.
- They also do not have a first round pick this year to fill in any of these holes.

After that, it's just a name change basically. Liles for Rozsival, Lack (their 4th goalie) and some spare parts I like for Stone, a strapping young stud. I had Omark and Filatov for many seasons, they did not play a game, they are literally just names on a sheet of paper in this deal.

Also of note, they do not gain anyone they need to waste an additional protect on here (like, I am not adding a 93 for a 90 or something like that)

Not a fan of this for Carolina for two reasons

Hull doesnt equal Gaborik imo. Hull will have a static rating and is has a more prominent name. Gaborik has been injury prone and is unlikely to be a 90 in the next game.

In addition, Carolina then gives up the next two best players in the deal.


Then you can add to the fact that Philly gets the better two names of the 4 81 D involved.

Then does Tlutly, a decent 3rd line center and Gaudreau, a spare, make up for this? imo no.

Easy no from me. Hull and Potvin are legends while Gabby and Anderson may easily go down in rating/overall next season.

I just want to be clear here...the main reason you are both rejecting is Gaborik's rating in the NEXT game (the one that comes out in like, 7 months)...not what we are using now (for the next 3-4 EANHL Sim seasons of simming) MIGHT change?

If that's the case, why didn't we apply that to Lecavalier? He is older than Gaborik and just as likely to decline as Gaborik is. And Liles? He was sent to the minors this year, and cleared waivers. What's that make his value?

Furthermore, I feel like you both overlooked a key piece of the reasoning here. Canes don't need Potvin at all (they have Hextall), but they do need defence. They do NOT have a pick in the first round to get an 85ish D, and this trade gives them that, plus more. Here, they get better D, more D, a replacement 2nd Line C, and some name-changes at depth.

I think if you look at their roster, there is no denying this makes the team better for the next 3-4 EA seasons. The steepest price they pay is 2 back-up goalies.
