What if we completely restructured the Keeper concept to allow teams to build depth teams if they want.
Right now, you can try, but the maximum amount of legit-depth you can have is 8 players. After that, you are stuck with 84s/83s because of the keeper. But what if we did this...
1) Every team has the default 8 Keepers. But:
2) for every player 90 and over that you have, you lose 1 keeper slot per 90+ player. If you have no one over 90, you gain 2 slots (giving you 10 keepers).
This would do 7 key things (and maybe an 8th).
1) Drafts would be deeper, thus funner. Probably better draft turn-out.
2) It would create a short-term trade influx, as people adjusted to this change (and it's early in the season, so it would allow everyone TONS of time to do that. More activity is good right now.
3) It would allow people to create deeper teams if they wanted, without losing those built teams to the draft.
4) It would give the league a more level playing field, since when you see a team with 4 players rated 90+, you know that team paid a hefty price to have and keep those 4 guys.
5) It will give the league a fresh new kick, including another avenue of drawing new people in. Sure, the open teams don't have the BEST players, but they can have some solid depth.
6) It creates a brand new strategy for team building, and gives you more options to do so. You can build a team on 4 super stars, or on 10 above-average players. Maybe I'm not so keep on having a pair of 91s if it costs me 2 other 87s to do so. Or maybe the trade-off is worth it to have a powerful first line?
7) It's also an indirect way of adding the realistic element of salary (meaning you can have a few expensive players, or a lot of good mid-level players). This is what creates balance in the real world, and what we could use to create balance here.
8) (possibly) it could create more depth in our auctions. I know I would be more inclined to bid a 90 on an 89 knowing it kept me under the new keeper rule system.
There has been a lot of discussion about what can be done to get new life and activity back into this league without fundamentally changing it. I think this suggestion does exactly that. Keep what is fun, and unique, while updating and evolving the stale structure and strategy that has lead to this current stagnation.
