Starting a new Be-A-GM with the Canucks. I'll play max 3 games, the rest will just be simming, let's see what I can do.
The boss is looking for 42 wins this up coming season, shouldn't be a problem.
My assistant coach gives me a list of his top 5 picks for the draft;
D Nathan Chiarlitti
D Brad Vetman
LW Taylor Stefishen
D Ryan O'Conner
LW David Quesnele
I update my trade block just before the draft, and add Ballard, Salo and Samuelsson to the block. I skim through the other team's blocks, but don't see anything worth targeting.
And we start the draft!
We hold the 25th pick in round 1.
Trades; Andrew Ladd for Colin White, Fredrik Sjostrom for Rob Schremp, Gregory Campbell for Sami Lepisto
No trade offers.
I'll throw TB an offer; Sami Salo, Aaron Rome, 5th for Steve Downie, Sean Bergenheim. They reject.
We draft 6'9 defenseman Sven Johansen from Sweden with our first pick.
We have no pick in the 2nd round.
No offers in round 2 either, we will hang up the phones.
Round 3; Buffalo is calling. Keith Ballard for 2011 1st, 2010 3rd. Intriguing, but I'll pass right now. I might come back to this later.
No pick in round 3.
Round 4; Columbus calls. Keith Ballard, Dan Hamhuis for Jan Hejda, Craig Rivet, Chris Clark. Definite pass.
With our 4th round pick, we take LW Dane Muench from the WHL.
Tampa Bay calls us in round 5 with an offer. Sami Salo, Aaron Rome, 5th for Brett Clark, Marc-Andre Bergeron.
We counter with our original offer; Salo, Rome, 5th for Downie, Bergenheim. They appreciate the fine art of trade negotiations, and accept.
We make a call to the Dallas Stars. We offer Keith Ballard for Jamie Benn. (This is a trade that worked in a past Be-A-GM, so I thought I'd try again.) No dice.
No pick in round 5, so we move to round 6, where we currently hold 2 picks.
Ottawa and Columbus made a trade. Heading to Ottawa is Craig Rivet, Marc Methot, and Grant Clitsome. Headed to Columbus is Pascale Leclaire (lol), Andre Benoit, and Geoff Kinrade.
Edmonton gives us a call; Martin Gerber, Jamie Johnson for Jeff Tambellini, and 2 6th's. We counter with Jeff Petry and Colton Teubert for Tambellini and the 2 6th's, with no luck.
We give Dallas another call, this time Brenden Morrow for Keith Ballard. No deal.
With our first pick in the 6th round, we take Jason Trott from the WHL, followed by Maxim Lamarche from the Q.
No offers again, so I give Burkie a call. Raffi Torres, Yann Sauve for Carl Gunnarsson? Nope, too many skaters for Toronto. How about you add Mike Brown? Almost had something, but no dice.
With our final pick in the draft, we take Alex Belzile from the Q.
The draft is now over. Didn't really do as much as I hoped, but we still have time to make moves.
I end up buying out a few players;
Tyler Weiman
Francis Lemieux
Nathan Paetsch
Nolan Baumgartner
Lee Sweatt
Mario Bliznak
Guillaume Desbiens
And then sign Jonathan Iilahti to a contract.
I update the trade block before July 1st, making 1 change. Sami Salo was moved, so Raffi Torres was added. I look through the other trade blocks and see Danny Briere on the block, I might make a pitch for him.
Heading into free agency, our lineup currently looks something like this;
Daniel Sedin - Henrik Sedin - Alexandre Burrows
Mason Raymond - Ryan Kesler - Mikael Samuelsson
Chris Higgins - Manny Malhotra - Steve Downie
Raffi Torres - Maxim Lapierre - Sean Bergenheim
Ex. Hansen, Rypien, Tambellini, Glass
Christian Ehrhoff - Alexander Edler
Dan Hamhuis - Keith Ballard
Kevin Bieksa - Andrew Alberts
Ex. Ryan Parent
Roberto Luongo
Cory Schneider
Before the season starts, I need to sign some d-men for the Moose, find a better second line RW, and maybe find a backup for Luongo so I can have Schneider play in the AHL for a year.
More later on.
