(Calgary) - The Calgary Flames and GM Cor99 have announced their new head coach, and new assistant coaches today.
The Flames for the past season and a half have had Cor99 as the interim coach, and Wendel Clark as the lone assistant coach, but now Cor99 will return to the GM box and Wendel Clark will get some help.
Who the help is? Well the Flames have announced that they have hired former Pens bench boss John Torterella to lead the coaching staff. The assistant coaches that Cor hired were former Flames head coach Mike Keenan and former Leafs assistant coach Keith Acton.
Many find this new coaching staff puzzling, because Cor likes a fast paced high scoring teams, but this coaching staff screams defence and a strong shut down game, we asked Cor why he would hire a total different coaching strategy.
"The way our team is right now, we have a good shutdown D, and we have a good defensive forwards but we also have some scoring, in order for this all to come together we need to turn our game towards a more defensive side, and this is the staff I have chosen to do it." Cor said.
It was speculated that once Marty Williamson and Tie Domi were all fired after Season 9, that Ron Wilson, "Torts' and Keenan were the leaders to take over this team, but with Ron Wilson coaching the Islanders, and with no intentions of leading the island, he was scratched off.
Cor eventually took the team over, with the help of Wendel Clark, the two had a successful time with the team, but now it was time for a change.
The Flames currently sit just 6 points out of a playoff spot, so Torts, Keenan, Acton and Clark will have to get down to work immediately.
