Yesturday I got the chance to sit down with the Kings Gm c00kies. It was one of those long conversation that made you feel like you really got to know the person. Enjoy
Q - For the first time in Kings' history, you guys are leading the league in points. Jari Kurri probably is the biggest reason. What has he brought to you guys in the dressing room that no other player has before?
A - We are on a bit of a losing streak, so I doubt we are 1st anymore. However, Kurri brings a certain desire to win that we were seemingly missing, he also has the skill to put the puck in the net at any time; making our top line a good mix of passing and shooting. Kurri isn't the only reason why we are winning. Consistant scoring from all 4 lines, defense playing well in both ends, and great goaltending from Roy is why we are where we are.
Q - I know everyone's goal is to win every game and then win the cup, but realistically, what do you expect your team to do at the end of the season?
A - Our goal is to win the division; home ice can be the difference in winning a long playoff series, so we want to get any advantage that we can on our opponent. Of course we want to win the cup, and it definitely isn't out of reach, but I would be thrilled with making the cup finals for the first time in my GM career.
Q - Your team has a great top 6, but your bottom 6 are lacking with only one notable player in Jeff Halpern. What should we expect from you to do in the to fix this problem or are you satisfied with your bottom 6?
A - I have contemplated that many times, but my bottom 6 are scoring consistantly and they do well in their defensive roles. You will probably see me make a move or 2 before the trade deadline, either by free agency or via trade.
Q - Patrick Roy is obviously one of the elite goalies ever to play the game and you're lucky enough to have him on your roster. Everything seems perfect about your goaltending, except your backup Peter Budaj. Is this a problem in your opinion or are you satisfied with playing Roy basically every game?
A - I am pleased with having Roy in net, he gives our team a chance to win night in and night out, he also has the ability to steal wins and points for us. Budaj is not a problem in my mind, I feel comfortable having him in net to rest Roy and intend to keep him, unless an offer that I feel is good for the team comes along. Roy is a work horse and can easily play 70+ games at a top level ability.
Q - You've been in this league for awhile now. What is the biggest thing you've learned by your time here about being a good GM because you have obviously have improved your team over the years?
A - I've learned that you can't get too attatched to any of your players, if they don't produce they have to go. I have also learned that goaltending is huge in this league, hence why I have Roy. One of my biggest regrets was trading Fleury, he played well for us and I shouldn't have traded him, but I ended up getting Roy and now I am set to go for a long playoff run.
Q - There has been recent claims that this new style of game has a 8th place 'glitch'. Do you think this is true or do you think Colorado and Florida deserved the cup that year?
A - I don't think that there is a "glitch", Florida built a strong playoff team and Colorado also built a strong team, they may not have had the fire power that the New Jersey's, Pittsburgh's, Wild's and Jacket's have, but they have character and integrity with the right leadership and poise to get them through those tough games that are needed to win the cup.
Q - C00kies is sort of a random name to pick for an user name. Were you eating chocolate chip cookies while registering for this league?
A - The first time I ever used that username was on Canucks Dot Com. I was not eating cookies at the time, but was thinking more of internet cookies, which is why I use 0's instead of o's. I also thought that there was no harm in c00kies, everyone one (well, almost everyone) likes cookies and there are a bunch of different cookies, just like people. I am one kind of cookie, and other people are other kinds, sort of like personalities, if all cookies were the same, you would grow old of them, but you're not going to get sick of me
