Calgary, Alberta 3:39 pm
The Calgary Flames have announced that they have done a clean sweep of their coaching staff Tuesday, mainly due to the teams underachieving effort this season.
The clean sweep consisted of the firings of head coach Marty Williamson, and assistants David Bell and Tie Domi. Marty Williamson and David Bell were formerly of the OHL's Barrie Colts while Tie Domi was a former NHL tough guy. Assistant coach Wendel Clark was the only coach to survive.
"We just need some fresh blood in here. I had big expectations to go far in the playoffs this season with Marty, but the fact that he failed to get this team into the playoffs with the talent we have, was unacceptable." GM Cor99 said.
Cor also mentioned that it wasn't just the coaching staff that let the team down, it was also the poor play of goaltender Cam Ward, and captains Doug Gilmour and Theo Fleury, but insists that the three are likely not going any where.
"Cam has had interest, all three of them have, but I just end up repeating myself that they aren't moving. Those three guys are the building blocks of this team, along with our top three or four defense." Cor added.
According to sources the Calgary Flames will start interviews with a number of candidates, that reportedly includes Ron Wilson, Mike Keenan, Brent Sutter and John Torterella. Cor also said that he hasn't ruled out that he will be behind the bench next season.
