Well boys, after a great draft, many blockbuster trades, and the hiring of some new GMs...there is only one thing left before we move forward into Season 2/2009-10. Free Agency.
On Thursday night, at 8:00 PM Eastern (5:00 Pacific), Free Agency will begin once again. Like last season, it will be a 24 hour event, and will end on Friday at the same times (8:00 PM Eastern, 5:00 Pacific).
There was some confusion about this last year, so I will say this again. It ENDS at 8:00/5:00. Bids posted exactly at 8:00 and 5:00 WILL NOT COUNT, 4:59 and 7:59 is the last possible time you can post an offer.
Something new this year along with Unrestricted Free Agency is our first-ever venture into Restricted Free Agency. All rules will be the same for this, except it technically does not quite end on Friday at 8:00/5:00 PM. At that time, the leading offer will become the winning bid, and then the team holding the RFA's rights will have 24 hours to choose whether to match the offer and retain the RFA, or not to match and accept the mandatory compensation from the offer.
Speaking of compensation, the scale is as follows:
$775,000 or less – No Compensation
$775,001 to $1,250,000 – 74+ Overall Player
$1,250,001 to $2,500,000 – 75+ Overall Player OR 2 74+ Overall Players
$2,500,001 to $3,750,000 – 76+ Overall Player OR 2 75+ Overall Players
$3,750,001 to $5,000,000 – 78+ Overall Player OR 2 76+ Overall Players
$5,000,001 to $6,000,000 – 80+ Overall Player OR Rookie Pick
$6,000,001 or higher – 80+ Overall Player AND Rookie Pick
As you see, players will be used as compensation in RFA along with picks for the higher offers. To clarify, the compensation will be chosen by the team that is offering, not the team holding the RFA's rights.
Example, my bid of $2,000,000 for RFA C Wayne Gretzky (99) is the winning bid at the end of the 24 hours. Because of this, I must offer a 75 overall player or two 74 overall players to the RFA's rights holder as compensation should he choose not to accept. I choose to offer two 74 overall players, LW Jeff Taffe (74) and LW Adam Henrich (74). The RFA's rights holder declines to match, and accepts my compensation offer.
