Welcome to Under The Spotlight’s first unique show. I will be addressing the top 5 trades that made the team have success, and the worst 3 trades that screwed over the team to make them what they look like today.
The Trades that Made their Team.
1. New Jersey Devils Receives;
C - Evgeni Malkin - 93 - PLY
C - Phil Esposito - 92 - PWF
C - Matthew Lombardi - 80 - SNP
Anaheim Ducks Receives;
C - Mario Lemieux - 95 - SNP
LW - Zach Parise - 86 - SNP
C - Ryan Kesler - 83 – GRN
Say what you want about Devils trading one of the best centers in the game away in this deal, but he received two superstars for the price of one. Not only do Malkin and Esposito still play for the Devils, that season, Malkin went on to get 100 points and Esposito got 40+ goals. This trade also helped the Devils reach their goal of having six 88+ forwards on their roster. Except the Devils to compete for the cup for years to come. GM Devilsfan13 continues to impress and not disappoint the Devils fans.
2. gets;
C - Evgeni Malkin - 87 - SNP
gets;
RW - Mike Bossy - 86 – SNP
Mike Bossy was great for Detroit the lone year he played there. He really took the league by surprise. We knew he was going to be good, but not be more than a 1.00 GPG player. Bossy got 82 goals and 126 points in his first year not even playing every game. Bossy would follow GM Jmcook to Columbus, and eventually won a cup there.
3. To
C Wayne Gretzky PLY 91,
D Brent Seabrook DD 79,
C Mikhail Grabovski DNG 77,
RW Devon Setoguchi DNG 77,
LW Antti Miettinen PWF 75
To
C Joe Thornton SNP 89,
D Victor Hedman DD 81,
C Jason Williams DNG 79,
RW Yasin Cisse DNG 78, &
LW Andrew Brunette PWF 77
The day the ‘Great One’ ended up in Ottawa, the city had a riot. Ottawa was always considered a good team, but this deal brought in the best player ever to play the game. He helped the team win a President’s Trophy in season 7. He will continue to be a threat in this league and will help the Sens compete for their division title and more importantly the Stanley Cup.
4. To Washington
J.S Giguere G 88
Teemu Selanne RW 82
Cory Perry RW 81
Chris Kunitz LW 79
Chris Ebbett C 76
Todd Marchant C76
1st in 2012
To Anahiem
Alexander Ovechkin 89 LW
Jose Theodore 83 G
Matt Bradley 74 LW
Donald Brashear 73 LW
Well this was one of the first deals ever made in this league, and it won a cup for one team. Ovechkin did wonders for Anaheim for many seasons including leading the team to a Stanley Cup in Season two. He led the Ducks to many division titles and almost every year he played there, helped them compete for the Cup.
5. gets:
2011 PIT 5th Round Pick
C Derick Brassard (76) $850,000 RFA 2010-11
D Alex Goligoski (73) $719,000 RFA 2010-11
LW Dany Heatley (86) $7,500,000 UFA 2014-15
D Andrej Meszaros (81) $4,000,000 UFA 2014-15
LW Rostislav Olesz (80) $3,125,000 UFA 2014-15
gets:
LW Fabian Brunnstrom (76) $875,000 RFA 2010-11
LW Ilya Kovalchuk (87) $6,400,000 UFA 2010-11
D Dion Phaneuf (82) $6,500,000 UFA 2014-15
What do I need to say about this trade? Pittsburgh got THE best combo in the league at that time in this deal. Pittsburgh got the second best winger in the game at that time to play with the best center at that time. Kovalchuk and Crosby is still arguably the best combo in the league and they continue to punish teams. If you didn’t notice too, they got Phaneuf in this deal that still plays for the Penguins. This deal helped the Pens win two president trophies in a row.
Hounarable Mention.
Gets:
D - Tomas Kaberle - $4,250,000 - 82 - UFA 2011-12
RW - Oleg Petrov - $2,000,000 - 79 - UFA 2013-14
D - Duncan Keith - $1,475,000 - 79 - RFA 2010-11
Gets:
D - Chris Pronger - $6,250,000 - 84 - UFA 2010-11
RW - Patrick Kane - $850,000 - 80 - RFA 2011-12
D - Nathan Oystrick - $999,000 - 76 - UFA 2014-15
Well did this trade ever work out for the Wild? Oleg fucking Petrov. What a super star this man turned out to be for the Wild. He had numerous of 100+ point seasons for the wild and was their best player in the playoffs by far. The reason this deal did not make the top 5 deals, is that Petrov never actually manage to win a cup for the Wild. He did do wonders though.
The Trades that Broke Them.
1. to
Patrick Marleau 86 C SNP-NYI
Kyle Wellwood 78 C DNG-NYI
Ryan Malone 79 LW SNP-TBL
to
Joe Thornton 89 C SNP-BOS
Nikita Filatov 80 LW DNG-TBL
Jussi Jokenin 80 LW DNG-TBL
Jeff Halpern 78 C PWF-TBL
This is what happens when you keep on downgrading. The Old Boston GM had one of the BEST teams in the league. He had a first line of Nash – Greztky – Iginla. They were one of the top contenders for the cup. All of a sudden Greztky gone, Nash is gone, Iginla is gone, and Boston has a bunch of crappy depth and Joe Thornton. To continue to downgrade at that point is complete stupidity. If I was a Bruins fan, I would be cheering the day this GM announced his retirement. Unfornuatly for you fans though, no better GM shows up and you’re best player all of a sudden is Nazem Kadri. This is the starting of these terrible current of events for the Boston Bruins makes this the worst trade ever made for a team in league history. You guys are quite fournate though for your new GM that is slowly taking the Bruins back up to a playoff team.
2. Detroit gets:
87 Kovalchuk, Ilya L 25 6.400 UFA 10/11
79 Armstrong, Colby R 25 1.200 RFA 9/10
Atlanta gets:
86 Datsyuk, Pavel C 29 6.700 UFA 14/15
81 Gonchar, Sergei D 5.000 UFA 10/11
Say what you want about this deal being even, but it was one of the WORST trades Atlanta ever made. Kovalchuk continues to be one of the best wingers in the league and it’s not like Datsyuk is still hanging around. He was moved almost instantly. Now Kovalchuk is ripping it up with Crosby and Atlanta is competing for last place with their superstar Tomas Holmstrom. Don’t except Atlanta to be one of the best teams in the league EVER unless a miracle happens.
to
Esa Pines 84 C SNP-NYI
Eric Cole 81 LW SNP-NYI
Anthony Stewart 76 C PWF-BOS
107th overall pick -BOS
3. To
Jason Spezza 89 PLY C
Jay Mckee 83 DFD D
To
Derek Roy 84 PLY C
Tomas Kaberle 85 OFD D
2nd round pick
Mike Van Ryn 79 DFD D
Brett Sterling 74 LW SNP
Alright even though Detroit has the most cups in this league’s history, they are now one of the worst teams in this league and this trade didn’t help them. GM Kruze gave up the team’s best player. Yea the deal is fair, but Kruze continued to downgrade his players. Recently, he has realized that this deal was not a good one for his team, but just said it wasn’t his fault, he didn’t know the system. Kruze better find a way to get a franchise player back in Detroit, or the fans won’t be too happy.
Well I hope that you enjoyed reading this episode, Thanks for reading.
